5,600 mm High-Strength Fluting Paper Machine Project in Jiangsu, China – 120,000 Tons/Year
Project Overview
A 5,600 mm high-strength fluting paper machine was successfully commissioned at a paper mill in Jiangsu Province, China, in late 2018.
The production line is designed to manufacture high-strength fluting paper for corrugated board production. It has a trimmed paper width of 5,600 mm and a design speed of 500 m/min, with a stable operating speed of 360–440 m/min.
The main commercial grades are 95, 100 and 110 gsm fluting paper.

Raw Materials
The main raw material used in this production line is recycled Old Corrugated Containers (OCC) pulp.
The machine is also designed to accommodate limited amounts of short agricultural fibers, such as corn-derived fibers, when required.
The fiber furnish can be adjusted according to the quality of available raw materials and the strength requirements of the finished fluting paper.
Stock Approach Flow System
The machine is equipped with a hydraulic headbox with an air-cushion system, designed to ensure stable stock distribution across the 5,600 mm paper width.
The stock approach flow system includes:
High-level deaeration tank
Multi-stage pressure screens
Multi-stage cleaners
Stable stock delivery system to the forming section
These components help maintain a consistent pulp flow and support uniform sheet formation.
Fourdrinier Forming Section
The single-wire Fourdrinier forming section has an effective forming table length of approximately 16.2 meters.
The forming section includes:
Ceramic dewatering elements with progressively increasing drainage intensity
Multiple vacuum box zones
A 900 mm diameter vacuum couch roll
Automatic forming fabric tensioning
Automatic forming fabric guiding system
This configuration is designed to provide stable dewatering of a wide paper web when processing predominantly recycled OCC pulp.
Press Section
After the forming section, the paper web enters a two-stage combined press section.
The press system incorporates vacuum-assisted web transfer and two press nips equipped with large-diameter rolls.
The designed sheet dryness at the press section outlet is approximately 42–44%.
Increasing sheet dryness before the dryer section reduces the amount of water that must be removed by steam drying, helping improve overall energy efficiency.
Dryer Section
The main dryer section is equipped with 1,800 mm diameter drying cylinders arranged in a single horizontal row.
The drying system includes:
1,800 mm diameter dryer cylinders
Open dryer hood
Basic heat recovery system
Sectional drives for the dryer groups
Siphon-based condensate removal and return system
This arrangement supports stable drying performance and continuous production of medium-basis-weight packaging paper.
Calendering Section
A two-roll hard-nip calender is installed at the end of the dryer section.
The calender is used to increase paper density, improve surface smoothness and stabilize properties important for subsequent corrugated board production.
Automatic Reel with Reel Spool Magazine
An automatic reel equipped with a reel spool magazine is installed at the end of the paper machine.
The reel is an integral part of the main paper machine, rather than a separate rewinder. It winds the continuous paper web into large parent rolls.
The reel spool magazine stores prepared spools and enables their automatic feeding during roll changes.
The system provides several benefits:
Formation of large parent rolls
Automatic feeding of replacement reel spools
Reduced manual handling during roll changes
Improved continuity of paper machine operation
Stable web tension during winding
The maximum parent roll diameter is approximately 1,800 mm.
After reeling, parent rolls can be transferred to a separate rewinder for slitting and conversion into finished rolls, when required.
Drive System
All major machine sections are equipped with independent variable-frequency AC drives with closed-loop control.
This arrangement enables synchronized speed control between the forming, press, dryer and finishing sections, supporting stable operation across the production line.
Project Results
Since commissioning in late 2018, the production line has been used for commercial production of high-strength fluting paper within the 85–130 gsm basis weight range.
The project demonstrates the reliable operation of a wide single-wire Fourdrinier paper machine using predominantly recycled OCC pulp to produce medium-basis-weight packaging paper.
